Why this matters to UK SMEs

A website remains a widely used owned digital presence for UK businesses. For SMEs it can support credibility, discovery, enquiries and service, but simply having a site does not establish that it is accessible, current or commercially effective.

Key breakdowns

Seventy-eight percent of businesses reported having a website in 2025 to 2026, up from 68% in 2023 to 2024. The survey also found widespread digitised-data handling at 86%, providing context for the broader move towards digital operations.

How to interpret this evidence

The statistic measures website presence, not traffic, functionality, ownership, quality, conversion or return. The increase between survey waves shows a difference in reported prevalence and should not be assumed to result from one particular market change.

Limitations

The result is weighted from 4,450 businesses surveyed between October 2025 and January 2026. It is self-reported and does not distinguish a basic information page from a transactional or integrated website. Sampling variation and survey-mode effects apply.

Practical considerations

G&G perspective: define the website’s job—such as building trust, generating qualified enquiries, supporting customers or completing transactions—and measure it accordingly. Keep ownership, security, accessibility, privacy information, content and calls to action current rather than treating launch as completion.
